By Ananda WeerasuriyaWhen the trial into the assassination of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga was taken up yesterday, the counsel looking after the interests of Mr. Wickrematunga’s family asked court to transfer the case to the CID as the Mirihana police appeared to be moving in slow motion.
He told Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Harsha Sethunga that after a long drawn out investigation only an innocent person had been detained so far. Mr. Wickrematunge was assassinated on January 8 near the Malagalage Junior School in Attidiya and later a man identified as Sugath Perera was remanded in connection with the theft of Mr. Wickrematunga’s mobile phone. The Mirihana police in a supplementary report told court that investigations were directed at whether the phone was given to the suspect by someone else. The Counsel was directed to request IGP about transfering the case to the CID. Trial was put off for the 10th and the Mirihana police was ordered to complete the investigation and report to court on the next trial date. http://www.dailymirror.lk/DM_BLOG/Sections/frmNewsDetailView.aspx?ARTID=69133 |
