Sri Lanka Police arrested the convener of the Inter University Students’ Union, Mr Udul Premaratne around noon today. He was leaving Sirikptha, the head quarters of main opposition United National Party (UNP) in Colombo after having discussion on recent harassment against university students and unrest prevailing in the Universities.
Sri Lankan Government has launched a countrywide suppression against university student movement in last few weeks. According to informed sources dozens of University students have been arrested and 176 of them have been suspended in recent times.
In a statement Mr. Karu Jayasuriya, deputy leader of the UNP said that This arrest, symbolically carried out as Mr. Premaratne was leaving the Sirikotha premises is a trademark ploy adopted by this regime to intimidate and strike fear in those who dare to oppose them.”
