The CID yesterday informed the Mount Lavinia Magistrate that the main suspect arrested in connection with the killing of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickramatunga had purchased five SIM cards using his national identity card. They said a member of the Army Intelligence Unit was involved in the buying of the cards.
TID had earlier arrested Kandegedara Priyanwansa of the intelligence unit and Nuwara Eliya garage owner Pimmei Jesudasan in connection with killing. Defence counsel told Magistrate Nirosha Fernando that the suspect had served in the army intelligence unit for 15 years and there was a move to transfer him to a cell where LTTE suspects who were rounded up on his information were being housed. The Magistrate ordered prison authorities to provide him adequate security and postponed the hearing for December 3.
