Senior journalist C.J. Amaratunga has written to the police chief alleging a plot by a section of the government against him using the police.
Mr. Amaratunga is a journalist with decades of experience and currently working as the provincial news editor of Sinhala language weekly ‘ Irida Lankadeepa’.
In his letter dated May 12, he has said that on the top of his work as a provincial news editor he writes analytical articles on social, cultural and political themes.
He also writes the weekly political column in Daily Lankadeepa called Guruda Vigrahaya.
Mr. Amaratunga has requested the IGP to inform the reasons of sending two officers belongs to the CID on a secret fact finding mission to his native village to inquire about him.
Mr. Amaratunaga has left his native village Vanniyankulam of Anuradhapura some 35 years ago.
Those intelligence wing officers has inquired from the villagers about Mr. Amaratunga’s political involvements and views.
They have made contradictory statements on why they were collecting information on Mr. Amaratunaga.
On one occasion they have said that Mr. Amaratunga has applied for a diplomatic posting and they are doing background check.
On another occasion, police have said that an applicant to police force has given Mr. Amaratunga as a reference person.
In his letter to the IGP Mr. Amaratunaga has rejected both reasons as
Mr. Amaratunga expresses his disappointment over the politicization of the police as shown by this unwarranted secret investigation.
He has requested the IGP to find out the reasons behind this inquiry and inform him.
The IGP has not responded to the letter send by the senior journalists to date.
