FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION SRI LANKA

For press freedom by Sunanda Deshapriya

Monday, 26 April 2010

The government’s crowing that they are the best champions of human rights has been proved another election gimmick only. Without stopping at violating human rights in the country which was the main reason for the denial of GSP+ by the European Union, the government has not allocated any portfolio for human rights in its new cabinet as well.
Despite manipulating the Ministry of Human Rights in the last government which was under Mr. Mahinda Samarasinghe to defend ‘Mahinda Chinthanaya’ and Rajapakse family, the human rights record of the government was exposed to the whole world with the withdrawal of GSP+ concessions given to Sri Lanka by the European Commission. However, the government carried out a media display promoting itself as the champions of human rights despite there were blatant human rights violations in the country carried out by the government and its goons.
However, ignoring human rights when appointing ministers and deputy ministers and allocating portfolios to them indicates that the UPFA government, President Rajapakse and his clan or their goons have no regard, at all, to human rights; all they are interested in is to fatten their purse.
