May 18, 2010: The Court of Appeal issued notice yesterday for the respondents named in the habeas corpus writ application of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, to appear before court on June 21.
The Court of Appeal issued this notice when the habeas corpus application, filed by Ekneligoda’s wife and children, was taken up before justices L. W. Ranjith Silva and D. S. C. Lekamwasam.
The respondents include the Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department, the Chief Inspector of the Homagama police, the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General.
The application stated that Ekneligoda was a freelance journalist attached to the Lanka e-news website and had submitted several articles and letters to the news agency and had been abducted on January 24 this year.
The application went on to state that Ekneligoda had been abducted on a previous occasion prior to this incident and released thereafter, while also noting that first, second and third respondents were aware of this incident.
The writ application requested the Court of Appeal to order the inquiry into Ekneligoda’s disappearance to be expedited and that he be produced before court.
