Neth journalist who revealed an illegal racket attacked

Journalist Mahasen Rupasinghe attached to Neth FM has been attacked after he exposed on radio an illegal coconut husk charcoal manufacturing operation that was being carried out in the Weliweriya, posing a great problem to residents in the area.

Rupasinghe was attacked in his hometown, Embaraluwa South in the Weliweriya area, on Wednesday (18) evening. He is currently receiving treatment for his wounds at the Gampaha Hospital.

Neth FM had highlighted this illegal operation in its programme Belumgala on the 6th and has broadcast a follow up to it on Monday (16). Rupasinghe had been attacked alleging his involvement in providing details of the operation to Neth FM.

The police have so far failed to arrest the owner of the illegal operation, one Ajith. Several journalists attached to Net FMs Belumgala programme have received threats for the exposes made by them.
