All suspects related to Galle agitation released – right to protest

Monday, 06 September 2010

Galle Magistrate granted bail to the three suspects who were arrested at the agitation organized by DNA on 12th of September in Galle and were kept in remand prison up to now.

The lawyers of the defence stated that everyone has a democratic right to protest. The lawyers further explained that the police have violated this right arbitrarily and they brutally attacked the peaceful demonstration which was held the same day.
Having considered those explanations Galle Magistrate Mr. Chamara Thennakoon ordered to release the three suspects on Rs. 200,000 sureties’ bails to each suspect.
Three Members of Parliament of the DNA Arjuna Ranathunga, Vijitha Herath and Ajith Kumara who were also accused of this incident appeared before the court today.

Further hearing of the case will be on 17th of January 2011.
