‘Gota’ orders to remove posters against Government

Sources within the Colombo Municipal Council indicate that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has assigned Special Commissioner Mr Omar Kamil to remove all political posters. It is learnt that this order does not apply to propaganda with regard to the President or the Government media issues. It is also learnt that 150 propaganda boards have been erected and the Municipal workers have been advised to be alert on pasting posters in other places and to remove those immediately.

He has also informed the cleaning Companies on contract basis in the private sector to remove unnecessary posters in their daily duty.

A Senior official of the CMC told that a proposal has come up to take approval before pasting posters in the future. Accordingly all posters regarding the safety of the state or political matters will have to be forwarded to the Ministry of Defence for approval. When granting official approval it has been decided to give priority to the state sector projects. Consequently the official added that from the end of October until the end of November priority will be given to posters on ‘sworn in’ programme by the President.
