Students demonstrate against repression – 21 in custody ( right to protest)

A massive demonstration against reprimanding four student leaders of Peradeniya University and two students of Rajarata University students on false allegations, had been organized by the Inter University Students Federation (ISUF) yesterday. The protest walk had started near the Aesthetic University and was heading towards the Ministry of Higher Education. When the students who entered the Ministry premises refused to leave until their demands are settled, a senior Police official promised to communicate with the students and forward their complaint to the Higher Education Minister.

However when the students came out peacefully with this agreement, some Police officers started assaulting the students. This developed into a clash between the students and the Police and some students were injured following the assault. Among them were three female students and nine male students.

According to Police Spokesman Prishantha Jayakody, 21 students have been taken into custody for questioning following this incident.
