Four media organisations yesterday condemned the assault by police on four journalists covering an Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) protest.
The media personnel, including Daily Mirror Photographer Pradeep Dilrukshana, who went to cover the protest, were assaulted by a group of police constables near the Viharamahadevi Park on Thursday evening.
“Members of four media organizations condemn this act of violence against the journalists who went to cover the protest. The journalists were assaulted despite their producing their media accreditation cards.” Free Media Movement (FMM) convener Sunil Jayasekara said.
The acting President of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association (SLWJA) Gunasiri Koththigoda urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to launch an impartial inquiry into the incident, and to take legal action against the policemen involved in the brutal act.
The organisations comprise the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association (SLWJA), the Free Media Movement (FMM), the Sri Lanka Tamil Journalists Alliance (SLTJA) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum (SLMFF).
