Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has ordered the director general of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) to take the necessary steps to impose restrictions on mobile phone SIM cards to minimize crimes, frauds and terrorist activities.
A senior TRC official told us the that following the Defence Ministyr directive, restrictions are to be imposed on the number of mobile SIM cards each individual could own and all personal details of SIM card holders are to be provided to the Defence Ministry.
TRC Director General Anusha Pelpita pseaking about the SIM card issue has told the media that
the government was planning to take steps to stop the illegal meothds used in taking phone clls to intenational destinations. He has said that some people use mobiule phone SIM cards to make illegal phone calls to foreign destinations.
He has added that in such a scenario, steps would be taken if necessary to impose limits on the number of SIM cards an individual could have from each mobile phone operator.
