Carrying of registration form of SIM cards at all times made compulsory following ‘Chinese advice’ Labels: China, Gotabhaya Rajapakse, TRC

The Defence Ministry has released a statement that everyone should carry the registration form received for SIM cards from the respective mobile phone operators at all times from next year and that they should be submitted security personnel if and when requested.

The statement says that SIM cards that have not been registered under any individual would be disconnected by December 31 and the each individual could possess only a maximum of five mobile SIM cards under his/her name.

According to the Defence Ministry statement, mobile phone packages given to employees of various companies under the respective company name will be stopped and the mobile phone numbers would have to be registered under the name of each employees.

A senior official at the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) had stated the Defence Ministry had made this decisions following advise received Chinese communications experts currently working as IT and telecommunications experts to the Ministry.

According to analysts, this would help the authorities to keep a close watch on the activities of the mobile subscribers
