The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) was planning to introduce new software to filter pornographic sites, TRC officials told The Island yesterday.

They said the software would be ready within the next six weeks.”Currently, we are having discussions with the Information and Communication Technology Department of the University of Colombo for technical assistance to launch the software,” TRC Chairman Anusha Palpita said.

The software would be user-friendly and even those who were not technologically savvy as such will be able to use it, he said.

Discussions were being held with all the internet service providers regarding the software, Palpita said.

It will automatically block all the porn sites before the connections are sold to the customers.Dr. Ruwan Weerasinghe, Director of the School of Computing, University of Colombo, said, “The software installation should be made mandatory for all the service providers.”

He said that more devices which were not technologically complicated should be set up. Earlier this week the TRC was ordered by Courts to ban over 300 sites with adult content.

“TRC is not legally empowered to block these sites unless we receive a Court order. If the laws are to be amended authority should be given the TRC for that purpose,” Palpita said.
