Lasantha Trial: Mobile Phone Thief Sentenced
The man found guilty of stealing the mobile phone of slain Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge on January 8, 2009 was sentenced to six months rigorous imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Nirosha Fernando of the Mount Lavinia court on Friday, November 12.
V. Prageeth Perera was found guilty of having stolen Wickrematunge’s mobile phone from the scene of the murder last year. Perera was also fined Rs. 1,500.
The Magistrate further ordered that two other suspects, Pitchai Jesudason of Nuwara Eliya and K. Piyasena also of Nuwara Eliya to be produced in court at the next hearing which is fixed for November 19, 2010. Both men are currently in remand.
