Chairman of Leader Publications Lal Wickrematunga yesterday inquired from President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who met media heads and newspaper editor yesterday at Temple Trees, why there had been no breakthrough in the investigation into the assassination of his brother and Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga, though two years had elapsed since that tragic incident.
President Rajapaksa said his government was determined to bring Lasantha’s killers to justice but there was no evidence and asked Wickrematunga whether he had any. Investigations were continuing, he said.
The President said a similar situation had arisen in regard to the probes into the assassinations of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and Minister D. M. Dassanayake, both of whom were members of the ruling party.
The Sunday Leader editor was assassinated in January 2009 at Attidiya in broad daylight while he was on his way to work. The Opposition promptly held the government responsible for the killing.
