The Free Media Movement condemns the attack onmedia persons and opposition politicians this afternoon, in Colombo, as the President and officials celebrated Sri Lanka’s Independence Day in Kataragama.

A gang armed with poles and other objects attacked a meeting organized by the UNP in Punchi Borella, Colombo.

The gathering had intended to walk to the Welikada Prison, where former Army General Sarath Fonseka is detained, to draw attention to his being deprived of freedom on the day that the country celebrates its freedom. The attack was obviously orchestrated and clearly targeted media persons. Sirasa cameraman was assaulted and his camera grabbed from him.

The Free Media Movement will issue a more detailed statement tomorrow.
