V FM MD assault, an act of intimidation – police

An armed group had assaulted V FM managing director Ruwan Sugathadasa recently with the intention of intimidating him into paying them extortion money, police investigations have revealed.

Three suspects arrested by Boralesgamuwa police in connection with the assault have been remanded by the Nugegoda magistrate’s court until September 06.

They will be produced for an identification parade on that day.

They had allegedly used a shovel, an ekel-broom and a club to beat up Mr. Sugathadasa at his Werahera home.

The suspected assailants are known to both Mr. Sugathadasa and V FM chairman Duminda Mayadunne.

They had previously obtained money from the radio station managing director to provide him protection, which had later been withdrawn.

The suspects had carried out the attack with the intention of getting back their lost income.

The gang of three had fled in a car after the incident, and its number was noted by a neighbour, which was used by police to trace the suspects.
