Ministry to grant registration to 41 websites

 The media ministry will grant registration next week to 41 websites that were selected under a selection process, said its secretary W.B. Ganegala.

A three member committee, including an additional secretary of the ministry and a representative of ICTA, has approved registration for these websites, he said.

Details of these websites, including their owners and journalists in service, will be published in the media.

The media ministry secretary went onto say that there were 81 applications and that 61 of them were considered at interviews held from 23rd to 28th of December.

Twenty were decided not qualified for registration, he said, adding that spot examinations of the websites proved some had given incorrect information.

Ganegala said there is no deadline for registration, and invited other websites to obtain registration and function in accordance with media ethics.

He added that the ministry way awaiting a court decision with regard to the blocking of access to five websites.
