Officials from the Urban Development Authority (UDA) forcefully detained a TV cameraman and a producer on Friday and deleted the visuals they had taken of some stalls being removed at the Pettah fish market.
The television cameraman from Sihatha TV was covering an incident where stalls were being removed together with his producer when UDA officials verbally abused them and took them to a corner.
Sihatha TV news manager Nayana Kaluarachi told The Sunday Leader that Producer Sandun Arosh and video cameraman Amantha Bashana were detained for some two hours in the fish market.
A military official who had been asked by the UDA officials to come to the scene had later forcefully deleted the visuals.
Kaluarachi insisted that that his crew had only gone to cover the stalls being removed when they were harassed and the visuals were later deleted by force.
He said that media rights groups had been informed of the incident but a police complaint was not lodged by Friday evening.
