Mudslinging websites will be closed – Govt.

Media Minister, Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday said that the government would close down websites engaged in mudslinging campaigns targeting politicians and other individuals.

Responding to a query, the Minister said that the government was in the process of moving against several other websites. The minister said that the government had received a spate of complaints as regards false and malicious websites reports.

The minister said that people couldn’t be humiliated in the guise of promoting the Opposition. The government believed in media freedom, though it couldn’t turn a blind eye to what was going on in the media field.

The recent raids on Lanka Mirror and Lanka X news were ordered following an investigation. Those critical of the government action hadn’t bothered to inquire into the conduct of those running these outfits, he said.
