Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday lashed out at English language Newspapers saying they were attempting to ‘gospel’ parliament proceedings.
Raising a privilege issue in Parliament, Wickremesinghe referred to the Hindu newspaper and another English daily, which said that UNP leadership had banned its membership from attending the Courts and that the UNP would boycott Courts. He said there was no need to boycott something which Parliamentarians were not obliged to attend.
“There is no obligation to go to Court. So if there is no obligation, there is no question of a boycott. We have no problem with those who went there voluntarily. I have not banned anyone. We had had no reason to go to Court. Our decision was in keeping with your ruling.
This is a part of a campaign that the English print media is resorting to against the powers of Parliament. We seem to be at the receiving end of this. We stand for the rights of the House,” he said.
